Manes and Tails, Special, Opportunities, Animal, Classified (sections colored when I can)

A little late than never.... (should have posted last week) so (with today to do it) after ALL the nice barn, poop etc, chores are done and before the grueling disgusting, claustrophobia inducing house work starts..... (OK I admit the washer and dryer are whirring) here we go (Kudos to everyone with day jobs, parenting and/ or horsing, my day job is only PT):

WOW !! Super MT Meeting in Monticello 10/9.

New interested people on the committee and super educational perks. And the kids liked my 'barn fix and go' treats, of marshmallows and peanut butter (spoon on, eat and go). Thanks also to teen helpers!! Plenty of summer success stories and encouragement.

Great Educational Sessions:

Thanks Shelley for the nutrition and apple cider vinegar info!

Thanks Shelley for the nice simple trigger point session that we can incorporate into every grooming!

Thanks Adam Hutchinson for you surprise visit and on the spot horse shoeing Q&A session.

PLEASE READ:

We also had a talk about fund raising which has been very difficult. The Manes and Tails Scholarship Fund (FUN/FAN) Club needs support in a big way. We have barely made ends meet this summer (like the rest of the world) and still need to put aside 2012 client and facilitator training monies. Barriers include the fact that when someone signs up for this fund raiser, they are helping people they may not know in towns across the County they don't even know exist. (and we thought this might catch on across the country?) If even half the people receiving this News Letter would decide to join up the scholarship fund raiser, we'd actually have a good start for the next year. Remembering we DO give away $100 a month! (barrier 2) They are NOT becoming a MT member (but a scholarship fan club member) if they want to be more involved they can attend meetings any time to be part of our volunteer team of encouraging therapeutic horse programs in Aroostook. Money raised for the scholarship fund is to help children and families gain the services they need, where they need them, and to help facilitators start their training to run programs. Being a County wide organization is a major barrier because we do not have any specific location (barrier 3) where we 'run business' but we move from place to place to meet, educate, network and/or assist. We do NOT govern facilities and certifications, but encourage things to happen. So the discussion has included perks for Scholarship Fan club sign ups; seeking media support with clients and/or parents speaking about the benefits of the programs...or changing the focus to what the horses have been up to, what their work entails. We appeal to everyone reading for suggestions, signups and or any encouragement.

Talk of dissolving the organization (due to finance) were thwarted by wonderful, confident volunteers, citing the benefits MT provides including the non profit status for grant seekers, education and promoting public awareness of horses helping, healing humans and, to the best of our ability, financially assisting spec needs children, adults and families engage in programs.

Next meeting to take place in Presque Isle.

Help wanted:

Dear Horse Friends, I am seeking for any of you in the Presque Isle area or close surrounding area, that would be willing to volunteer an hour or two a month. This might be a good volunteer project for one of the 4-H kids.

In short, I was asked if I knew any one who owned a horse that would be willing to volunteer once or twice a month to allow a girl with special needs to visit your barn, pet your horse (maybe the right person would be willing to teach her a thing or two about horses). This could be a short term thing as the attention span isn't long, but we'd like to help her out as much as possible. She would be accompanied by a staff person and supervised at all times (although she's a really nice girl, that's just our policy).

If you would be interested in helping, please let me know and send your contact information as I will pass it along to the appropriate supervisor who will then contact you and set something up. They would be willing to work around your schedule and your rules.

Been out of the loop for a bit, so please pass this along to others if you think they might be interested.

Thanks Everybody, Stephanie Dumais [email protected]

On Friday, October 28, join WWC for the five-session class Career Exploration: Finding Your Place in Today’s Job Market. Are you unemployed, underemployed, or considering a career change? Join this workshop to identify career options that match your strengths, skills, and experience. The class will explore the needs of the current and future workforce, local employment opportunities, and educational and training options. In the class, you will develop a step-by-step plan to build your career and get that next job. Class dates are October 28, November 4, 11, 18, and December 2. The class meets on Fridays from 1:00-4:00 PM at the Caribou Learning Center.

WWC will offer a two-session class on personal financial fitness on Wednesdays, November 2 and 9, from 2:00-4:30 PM at Northern Maine Community College. Feel stuck in the credit card trap? Credit Yourself: The Way to Financial Fitness will help you learn how to read your credit report, understand your credit score, keep current with shifts in the credit card and lending industry, and gain control of your finances. This is one way to face your credit situation, create a plan, and set goals to improve your credit score. Before starting a business, get your credit house in order. If you successfully complete both classes and make a financial plan, you will be eligible to apply for a $250 grant to help meet your financial goals. Ten grants will be awarded statewide. Credit Yourself is generously sponsored by KeyBank.

Do you wonder how you will be able to afford to retire from working? Have you started planning for retirement? Whether or not you have started saving for your retirement, this one-session workshop will help you take the next step, or even the first step. Learn the alphabet of terms such as 401(k), IRA, and Roth IRA. Know how you can get tax benefits and match money when you save for retirement. Understand the pieces involved in financing retirement, how to put the puzzle together, and develop a plan to secure your retirement. This workshop is made possible in part by a grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, through a partnership with United Way Worldwide.

There is no cost for the WWC classes, and pre-registration is required. To register today, call 764-0050 or email [email protected] For more information, visit WWC online at www.womenworkandcommunity.org.
