NARHA MEETING SUCCESS News Release BDN

Manes and Tails is glad to announce that NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Assoc.) has had the first ever State meeting in Aroostook County, which took place in Monticello on May 21, 2011. This is a milestone in MT's history as the organization's goals have been to increase and improve equine assisted activities in Aroostook over the past 7 years. MT's first grant from Maine Communities Foundation in 2004 assisted three county people to become certified instructors through NARHA who eventually established a center called Aroostook Horse and Pony Associates ( APHA) in Monticello. The NARHA Meeting was co-hosted by APHA and MT, and presided by State Chair Nichole Sargent.

After a delicious pot luck lunch and networking, Nichole displayed a map of Maine with NARHA memberships and centers available for services. She then engaged participants in an ice breaker game and horse related activities. Nichole has extensive background in Equine Assisted Activities, Community Support Programs and Shared Living Models, along with much experience with DHHS. She also shared about the highly anticipated on-site Equine Specialist Certification for Instructors and the 'fast tract' option: news that NARHA will be coming out with a new name in Fall 2011 which encompasses more of what NARHA is supporting including many Equine Assisted fields, Vaulting, Driving, Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning and many other programs.

The NARHA National Conference and Annual Meeting will take place in Kentucky this fall. Nichole encouraged nominations for Instructor, Horse and Volunteer of the year (see NARHA web site for more nomination information and forms) The Region Representative Nomination for Region 1 is open too. The NARHA website is a great resource with a wide variety of information available to members (NARHA.org) especially the 'list serve' and the Region 1 Site. The 'Rein Them In' Contest is NARHA's way to encourage current memebers to promote the industry and get new membership More info also available on the site.

NARHA Region 1 Members should take advantage of Facilitator Scholarships brought to you by NESAR!!! Information concerning Scholarships can aslo be accessed on the NARHA Region 1 website. Nichole hosts the Maine Equine Activities Page on Facebook, which has updates, trainings or State Meetings. For more information contact Nichole with questions at [email protected]
